Sepolia Testnet

Ethereum Sepolia testnet node setup

Sepolia is Ethereum’s primary testnet for application developers, paired with the Beacon Chain for Ethereum 2.0 consensus.

This guide covers two deployment methods for running a Sepolia Beacon Chain node:

  1. Systemd Method - Simple, direct system access
  2. Docker Method - Containerized deployment

1. Prerequisites

Before starting, ensure you have:

  • Operating System: Ubuntu/Debian system
  • Storage: 1TB SSD (NVMe preferred)
  • RAM: 16GB+ (varies by method)
  • Knowledge: Basic Linux administration
  • Domain: Required for the Docker method only

2. Deployment Methods Comparison

a. Method 1: Systemd + UFW

Pros:

  • Simpler setup process
  • Direct system access
  • No container overhead
  • Straightforward troubleshooting

Cons:

  • Higher memory usage (can exceed 16GB cache)
  • Manual updates required
  • No SSL automation
  • Basic external access

b. Method 2: Docker + Nginx + Certbot

Pros:

  • Better resource control (~26GB managed)
  • Easy deployment and updates
  • Automated SSL certificates
  • External access through your own domain
  • Simplified updates with docker compose pull

Cons:

  • More complex architecture
  • Steeper learning curve
  • Container management overhead

4. Decision Guide

a. Choose Systemd if you:

  • Prefer simpler setup
  • Memory usage isn’t a concern
  • Don’t need external access through your own domain
  • Are comfortable with manual updates

b. Choose Docker if you:

  • Need resource management
  • Want automated SSL and a reverse proxy setup
  • Prefer containerized environments
  • Plan to expose services externally
