Before you deploy any blockchain node, do a basic server setup. Keeping the system updated and installing a few common utilities makes for a smoother install and fewer dependency problems later.
This guide assumes you are using Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, the operating system used throughout this documentation. If you are using a different Ubuntu version or another Linux distribution, some package names or commands may differ slightly.
1. Update and upgrade the system
Start by updating the package index and upgrading all installed packages to their latest available versions.
apt update -qy && apt upgrade -qy -q(--quiet) reduces the amount of output displayed during execution.-qqenables an even quieter mode by suppressing most informational messages.-y(--yes) automatically answers yes to confirmation prompts.- These flags can be combined, such as
-qyor-qqy, depending on your preference.
Keeping the server up to date gets you the latest security patches and bug fixes before you install anything else.
2. Install required packages
Install a set of common packages used throughout this documentation.
apt install curl git jq lz4 build-essential snapd unzip wget tar -qy These packages cover downloading files, cloning repositories, extracting archives, compiling software, and processing JSON output. Most blockchain projects rely on one or more of these utilities during installation or maintenance.
- Run these commands as a user with
sudoprivileges or as therootuser. - Specific projects may need additional dependencies. The corresponding guides cover any extras.
- After these steps, your server is ready for the installation guides.
